Motability FAQ's

You are permitted to change your nominated drivers if you contact the RSA Motability. The drivers that are shown on the certificate of Motor Insurance will be subject to the scheme's policy and must all meet the criteria of RSAM, whether or not they were added at application or during your lease agreement. For your request to be accepted, RSAM will need all the necessary details of the new driver such as, their driving licence number, motoring convictions and other damage or loss claims within the past 5 years. The new driver must also speak to RSAM themselves and allow for their details to be checked with the DVLA. Only drivers that are listed on your Certificate of Motor Insurance is allowed to drive your car.

The lease agreements on the Motability Scheme are usually for 3-5 years. Customers technically don't have the right to end the agreement early but if you have a valid reason as to why you need to cancel your agreement you will need to contact us directly and discuss the reasons for it.

Important details will be requested from you including whether or not you plan to apply for another vehicle on the Motability Scheme. Whenever all the correct details are received from you, we will take a look at your request and confirm the decision with you.

A charge of £250 could be put in place to cover the costs and you will not be entitled to the Good Condition Bonus. You may also get refunded on pro-rate basis on any Advance Payments and if you cancel your lease 3 times within a 7 year period, your eligibility may be affected and we cannot guarantee you will be allowed to use the Scheme again.

PIP is the new allowance which is becoming the new DLA (Disability Living Allowance) which is for disabled people aged 16-64. PIP has two components which are, the daily living and mobility component. The components have 2 rates of payment, the standard the rate and the enhanced rate which is just like the DLA, even the prices are the same. The enhanced rate of the Mobility scheme is used to lease a Motability Scheme car, scooter or powered wheelchair. This is similar to the higher rate mobility component of DLA.

DLA had started to be replaced by PIP in April 2013 in Great Britain and in June 2016 in Northern Ireland. The replacement is expected to be completed by this year (2019).

If you are currently receiving DLA, then you will be invited to make a claim for PIP which will be processed by the DWP or the department for Communities in Northern Ireland, which has taken place already and will be completed this year (2019) sometime. You will receive a letter which will require you to respond within a matter of 4 weeks, it is important that you respond within the amount of time they have given you as you may not receive PIP.

If you are looking for financial help because you can't afford the Scheme, Motability, the charity, may be able to provide you with the help you need. The financial help may include grants towards Advance Payments for cars, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs), driving lessons and adaptations.

You are allowed to learn to drive in your Motability vehicle. Disabled drivers can take lessons from the age of 16 and any other drivers who have their provisional licenses will need to be over 21 if you want them to drive your car and only 1 learner driver is allowed on your Certificate of Motor Insurance at a time. Financial help towards your driving lessons may also be an option.

WAVs are tailor-made and are built depending on the requirements of an individual customer. The reason WAVs are more costly than original cars is because they cost more to produce as they have extra components added onto the vehicle, such as a ramp or lift and sometimes they have a lowered floor. This results in WAVs being higher Advanced Payment cars.

An initial lease of 5 years is given to the customers as this will give them best value for money without compromising on reliability or service.

You need to have at least 12 months remaining on our award to join the Motability Scheme. If you do not have 12 months remaining, you won't be allowed to place your application. The DWP will either extend or your renew your allowance.
